GutClues — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2026-05-07

GutClues is a private, on-device food and bowel tracker by True North Originals, LLC, available on iOS and Android. This page explains how GutClues handles information. The short version: your data stays on your phone — there is no server, no account, and nothing to upload.

The short version

  • We do not have a server. Your food logs, bowel logs, symptoms, meds, notes, photos, and voice notes live only in GutClues' private database on your phone.
  • We do not collect, transmit, sell, or share your data — because we never receive it.
  • There are no accounts, no sign-ups, no analytics, no advertising SDKs, and no third-party trackers.
  • When you use Export, you choose where your data goes — by email, file, or share sheet. We never see it.

What we collect

Nothing. GutClues has no backend. We do not receive, log, or store any information about you or your use of the app on any server we operate.

What you store on your device

GutClues stores the entries you create on your phone, inside a local database that only GutClues can read. That includes:

  • Food entries, bowel entries, feelings, notes, medication list, and daily habits
  • Optional photos you take of meals or symptoms (kept in the app's private storage)
  • Optional voice notes you dictate (transcribed on-device; the audio is not uploaded)
  • App preferences, such as your last-used screen

If you delete the app, your phone deletes the GutClues database with it, and your data is gone. We cannot recover it for you, because we never had a copy.

Health data we handle (on-device only)

GutClues is a health-related app. Under Google Play's Health Apps Declaration, the categories of health data you may enter into GutClues are:

  • Activity and Fitness — your single-tap water, coffee, and activity habit logs.
  • Nutrition and Weight Management — the meals and food items you record (chips, custom entries, recents).
  • Stress Management, Relaxation, Mental Acuity — the mood/feeling face you tap and the optional symptoms attached to it (cramps, bloating, nausea, stress, etc.).
  • Diseases and Conditions Management — your bowel/stool entries (Bristol-style picker), symptoms, and the time-of-day patterns GutClues highlights.
  • Medication and Treatment Management — the medications you save and the daily "I took this" taps you log against them.

All of this data is stored only in the app's private database on your device. It is never transmitted to True North Originals, LLC, and it is never sent to any third party automatically. GutClues does not read from or write to Apple HealthKit, Apple Health, or Android Health Connect.

Permissions we ask for

GutClues asks for a permission only at the moment you trigger the feature that needs it. You can decline any of these and continue to use the rest of the app.

  • Camera — only when you tap to take a photo of a meal or symptom. On Android, GutClues hands the request to your phone's built-in camera app rather than requesting the camera permission directly. Photos are saved to GutClues' private storage on your device.
  • Microphone — only when you tap to dictate a note or voice memo. On both iOS and Android, voice transcription is performed on-device by the operating system; the audio does not leave your phone.
  • Photo Library / Media — only when you pick an existing photo to attach to an entry.
  • Biometric unlock — Face ID or Touch ID on iOS, fingerprint or face unlock on Android. Used to lock GutClues so only you can open it. The biometric check is performed by your operating system; GutClues never receives your biometric data.
  • Notifications — only for reminders you have enabled inside the app. On Android 13 and newer this requires your one-time permission grant.

GutClues does not request location, contacts, calendar, SMS, call logs, accessibility services, or background body-sensor access.

Export

The Export screen lets you turn your last 60 days of logs into a one-page doctor-ready PDF, a CSV, a JSON file, or a ready-to-paste prompt for ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. The app hands the file to your phone's system share sheet (iOS share sheet or Android Sharesheet). You choose the recipient — email, your doctor, a saved file, an AI assistant. Exports are de-identified by default: no name, email, or birthdate is included, and a fresh random record ID is used so you can ask an AI to delete the conversation later. Anything you send leaves the protection of GutClues and becomes subject to the terms of the service you send it to.

How to delete your data

  • Delete a single entry — open the entry from the Today screen and tap delete.
  • Delete everything — uninstall GutClues. Because the app stores your data only in its own private database on your device, removing the app removes the database, the attached photos, and any voice notes along with it. There is no other copy.

Because we never receive your data, there is nothing for us to delete on a server. If you have shared an export with a third party (such as your doctor or an AI assistant), you must contact that party to delete their copy. We retain no logs about you ourselves.

Tracking, analytics, and ads

We do not track you across apps or websites. GutClues contains no analytics SDKs, no advertising identifiers, no attribution SDKs, no Google Analytics for Firebase, no crash-reporting third parties, and no advertising of any kind. There is no use of the Android Advertising ID. If iOS ever prompts you for App Tracking Transparency on our behalf, you can decline with no loss of functionality.

Data Safety summary (Google Play)

  • Data collected: none. GutClues does not collect any user or device data on a server we operate.
  • Data shared with third parties: none. Exports happen only when you initiate them and only to the recipient you choose.
  • Encryption in transit: not applicable — no user data is transmitted by the app.
  • User control: you can delete individual entries from inside the app at any time, and uninstalling the app removes all data from your device.
  • Account required: no.

Your rights (GDPR / UK GDPR / CCPA)

Because we do not collect or process your personal data on any server, we hold no records about you to access, correct, port, or erase. The rights of access, rectification, portability, and erasure are exercised directly by you from inside the app — your data is on your device and under your control. We do not sell or share personal information.

Children

GutClues is not directed to children under 13 and is not intended for use by them. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has used the app, simply delete it from the child's device and all of that data is removed. See our Children's Privacy notice for the company-wide policy.

Medical disclaimer

GutClues helps you record symptoms and spot patterns. It is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified healthcare provider.

Changes to this policy

If we ever add a feature that would change how data is handled — for example, an optional cloud backup — we will update this policy before enabling the feature and we will tell you inside the app. Your previous on-device-only data will never be silently uploaded.
