I Hate Reading is an educational reading app that helps struggling readers — including children with dyslexia — learn and practice reading by building their own stories. A child speaks or types a story idea, and the app writes a short, age-appropriate chapter book they can read along with and practice reading aloud. We built it to be private by design.
The short version:
No accounts or logins No ads No third-party tracking or analytics No personal profiles Reading data stays on the device Voice is processed on-device
This policy is published by True North Originals, LLC ("True North Originals," "we," "us," or "our"), the maker of I Hate Reading.
1. What we do not collect
I Hate Reading has no accounts and asks for no personal information. We do not collect or require a name, email address, phone number, birthday, or login. We do not use advertising identifiers, location, contacts, photos library access for tracking, or any third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. We do not build advertising or behavioral profiles, and we never sell data.
2. Reading data stays on the device
The books your child creates, their reading progress, fluency history, reading-level goals, characters, and settings are stored only on your device using Apple's on-device storage. We have no server account tied to your child and no copy of this library. If you delete the app, this data is removed with it. You can share or print a book yourself using the in-app export feature; nothing is published anywhere unless you choose to share it.
3. Speech recognition is on-device
When your child taps the microphone to tell the app a story idea — or reads aloud so the app can follow along — speech recognition runs on the device using Apple's on-device speech framework. Their voice audio is not uploaded to us and is not stored. We only use the recognized words to capture the story idea or to follow along as they read.
4. How stories are generated (the one thing that leaves the device)
To write a new story and its cover illustration, the app sends a small request to our private generation service running on Amazon Web Services (AWS). That request contains only:
- the story idea your child typed or spoke (for example, "a brave dragon who is afraid to fly"),
- any character names or interests they chose to include, and
- the reading level the story should target.
This text is used only to generate the requested story text and cover image, which are returned to the device. It is processed transiently for that purpose. It is not used to identify your child, build a profile, train advertising, or for any unrelated purpose. Because anything typed into a story prompt is sent for generation, we recommend not entering full real names, addresses, or other identifying details into prompts.
Content safety filters screen both the prompt and the generated text so the app does not produce inappropriate material for children (see the Terms of Use for details).
5. Educational use & children's privacy
I Hate Reading is an educational reading app built to help struggling readers — including children with dyslexia — learn to read and practice reading by building their own stories. It is designed for children and intended to be set up and supervised by a parent, guardian, or teacher. Consistent with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and applicable student-privacy expectations, we designed the app to collect no personal information from children or students. There are no accounts, no social features, no behavioral advertising, and no third-party tracking, so we do not create or maintain student education records. The only information transmitted is the story-prompt text described in Section 4, used solely to generate the story the child asked for. Parents, guardians, and teachers control the device and can delete all data at any time by removing the app. If you believe a child has provided personal information in a way you would like addressed, contact us at info@truenorthoriginals.com.
6. Subscriptions and payments
I Hate Reading offers an optional auto-renewable subscription. All payments are processed by Apple through the App Store. We never see or store your payment card details. Apple tells the app only whether an active subscription exists so it can unlock new-story creation; this entitlement is checked on-device through Apple's StoreKit. Apple's handling of your purchase is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
7. Service providers
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) — hosts our private story-generation service, which processes the prompt text described in Section 4 to produce story text and cover images. AWS acts as our processor and does not use this content for its own purposes.
- Apple — provides the App Store, on-device speech recognition, on-device storage, and subscription billing.
We do not use advertising networks, data brokers, or analytics vendors.
8. Security
Requests to our generation service are sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). On-device data is protected by your device's standard security and your device passcode. Because reading data lives only on the device, the most important safeguard is the security of the device itself.
9. Your choices and data deletion
You are always in control. To remove all of your child's reading data, delete the app from the device. To remove a single book, delete it in the app. You can manage or cancel a subscription in your Apple ID settings. For any privacy request or question, email info@truenorthoriginals.com and we will respond.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. If we make a material change, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, surface a notice in the app. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated policy.
